Backing up your files
When you sign in with your Microsoft account, you'll be able to save things to an online service such as SkyDrive. When you set up backups on your phone, you can:
- Automatically upload your photos and videos to SkyDrive so you can see them from anywhere you can access the web.
- Sync your SMS and MMS messages to Hotmail so you have a backup, just in case.
- Create backups of your phone’s settings, including the list of apps you’ve installed, your theme color, Internet Explorer favorites, accounts, and more.
- You can fine-tune your backup options in Settings > backup. For example, you can automatically upload your photos and videos at a high resolution, or manually back up your settings anytime.
Connecting to a Wi-Fi network
- On the Start screen, slide to the left.
- Tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Wi-Fi networking On/Off switch to turn Wi-Fi on. You'll then see a list of available wireless networks.
- Tap the wireless network you want to connect to.
- If you selected an open network, your phone will automatically connect to the network. (Some Wi-Fi networks, such as ones you might find in coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, or elsewhere, may require you to enter a password in your web browser before you can connect.)
- If you selected a secured network, enter the required password and then tap done.
How to get and install updates
Setting update notification and downloading option
You can set your phone to notify you when new updates are available for your phone.
You can also allow your phone to automatically download those updates.
- On the Start screen, slide to the left.
- Tap Settings > phone update.
- Select the Tell me when updates are available for my phone check box.
- Choose whether you want to allow automatic downloading of updates if you data settings allow it. If you disable this option, your phone will only download updates over Wi-Fi or when it's connected to your computer.
Factory reset / Performing a factory reset via settings
The most convenient way to do a factory reset is via the settings.
- On the Start screen, slide to the left.
- Tap Settings > about.
- Tap reset your phone, and then tap yes.
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons
If you can’t turn your phone on or access settings, you can still perform a factory reset
by using the phone's buttons.
- Turn the power off.
- Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button. Release the VOLUME DOWN button when you see an icon on the screen.
- Then press the following hardware buttons in sequence: VOLUME UP > VOLUME DOWN > POWER > VOLUME DOWN.
